Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia is an originalist so far as the Constitution is concerned. He doesn’t believe in a “living Constitution” that is reinterpreted as the world changes; he’s dedicated to the original meaning of the words of the Constitution, insofar as he can discern it, and applying that meaning in all circumstances.
This week he decided that the first part of the Second Amendment — “A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State” — was just padding, and didn’t mean anything. Yeah, the authors of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights were always rambling on like that.
